- Yoon on early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed a few hours earlier, giving in to lawmakers rejecting military rule.

- He declared emergency martial law Tuesday night, claiming to eradicate "anti-state" forces and uphold free constitutional order, marking the first martial law declaration since the country's military dictatorship ended in the late 1980s.

- In the wake of the political turmoil, South Korea's defense minister said on Wednesday he had submitted his resignation to the president. Yoon's chief of staff and senior secretaries also offered to resign en masse.
