Over 2.94 million voted, 71.2% turnout rate

More than 2.94 million people voted in the District Council Election and the turnout rate was about 71.2 percent, said Barnabas Fung, chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). 

The commission has received over 6,540 election complaints, said Fung.

The Electoral Affairs Commission of Hong Kong carried out the ceremonial opening of the ballot boxes of this year's District Council Ordinary Election after the polls closed on Sunday night.

Both the voter turnout rate and the number of voters reached a record high.

More than 2.5 million voters cast their ballots in Hong Kong

As of 6:30 p.m. local time, around 2.5 million people have cast their ballots. The turnout rate was 60.36 percent.

Over 3,680 voting complaints received in HK

"We have received over 3,680 complaints over the voting process," said Barnabas Fung, chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission of the HKSAR, vowing to deal with the complaints as soon as possible. 

About 4.3 million people are registered to vote in this year's elections, he said, adding that polling staff are handling three times as many voters than in previous elections.

As of 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, over 2.15 million people have cast their ballots and the turnout reached 52.14 percent.

2019 HK district elections turnout hits record 47.26 percent 

The turnout of the 2019 Hong Kong District Council Ordinary Elections reached 47.26 percent as of 3:30 p.m. local time, surpassing the final turnout of 47.01 percent in 2015, according to the Registration and Electoral Office.

Record 1.52 million voters cast their ballots in Hong Kong

As of 1:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, over 1.52 million people have cast their ballots in 2019 Hong Kong District Council Ordinary Elections, surpassing the 1,467,229 voters in the last district council elections four years ago.

With nine hours still left until the polling stations closed, the turnout reached 36.89 percent, much higher than the 17.66 percent in 2015 during the same time period.

Turnout reaches 30.98 percent in district council elections

Over 1.28 million people have cast their votes as of 12:30 p.m. local time, with the turnout reaching 30.98 percent.

The turnout in Kowloon City has been the highest among 18 districts, reaching 33.15 percent. The lowest turnout so far is at 28.18 percent in Islands District.

Over a million cast their votes in Hong Kong

Over one million people have cast their votes in Hong Kong District Council elections as of 11:30 a.m. local time Sunday, with voter turnout reaching 24.37 percent.

The turnout at Kowloon City has been the highest among 18 districts, reaching 26.4 percent. Yuen Long has witnessed the lowest turnout so far, at 21.92 percent.

The Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) Chairman Justice Barnabas Fung Wah said 744 complaints regarding the district council elections have been filed as of 9:00 a.m. local time, adding that vote counting will start as soon as the polls close. 

Over 430,000 people have cast their votes

The 2019 Hong Kong District Council Ordinary Elections are said to be the "fiercest."

Over 430,000 people have cast their votes as of 9:30 a.m. local time, reaching a 10.41% turnout, much higher than the 3.85% in 2015 during the same time period.

Junius Ho shows confidence in Hong Kong people

Hong Kong lawmaker Junius Ho, who survived a deadly knife attack during an election campaign event last month, is confident that the people of Hong Kong will vote for peace and prosperity during the district council elections on Sunday.

"There may be some changes in the political landscape, however we should not fear anything because we are quite confident that in Hong Kong we have a substantial majority of the population that supports a law-abiding society," Ho told CGTN.

After casting her vote, Carrie Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, met with the press on Sunday. She appealed the residents to come out and vote while calling the district council elections "very important."

"We are facing many challenges, but I am pleased to say that efforts with all parties have been made to ensure the election," Lam said, adding that the HKSAR government will closely monitor relevant developments and make sure the election is conducted successfully.
